A “Chinese Culture Carnival” (中华文化嘉年华) will run from August 14 to 17, 2026 at the Parade Ground of Tai Kwun (大馆) in Central, Hong Kong, China, with free admission for all. The event serves as the finale of the Jockey Club’s “Hexi Zhonghua” (何以中华) Cultural Ambassador Programme and will showcase the achievements and works of more than 240 cultural ambassadors trained under the scheme, alongside a wide range of hands-on workshops and craft experience zones covering Hanfu dressing, fan-making and Luban lock puzzles, inviting the public to immerse themselves in the appeal of Chinese aesthetics.
Workshops: Hanfu, Lacquer Fans and Luban Locks
The on-site activities are rich in highlights. The Hanfu experience workshop includes a styling and makeup corner where participants can change into historical costume, take photos against the heritage backdrop of Tai Kwun, and mix Chinese and Western styles. A Chinese lacquer-fan workshop uses the traditional raw-lacquer craft, an intangible cultural heritage (ICH) technique, dipping lacquer into water and transferring the swirling pattern onto the fan surface — every fan comes out unique. A Luban lock challenge station lets visitors dismantle and reassemble mortise-and-tenon interlocking puzzles by hand. There are also free experiences including blue-and-white porcelain coaster DIY, herbal sachet workshops (with seven dried floral scents to blend), fan weaving, cheongsam bookmark making, and blue-and-white porcelain magnet painting — all completed pieces can be taken home.
Daily Performances: Puppet Shows, Acrobatics and Dynasty Showcases
Multiple cultural performances will take place at scheduled times each day. Reported programs include puppet shows, acrobatics and Chinese dance performances such as “Spring Odes and Summer Rhapsodies: Dancing China” (春歌夏赋·舞见中华), with audiences given chances to interact with performers. According to the event timetable, the afternoon of August 14 features a diabolo performance and the puppet plays “Daming Mansion” (大名府) and “Flaming Mountain”; the afternoons of August 15 and 16 feature acrobatics and a “Hanfu Dynasty Showcase” spanning the Warring States period to the Ming dynasty; the early evening of August 16 includes Chinese dance pieces “Beginning of Spring” (立春), “Gathering Ferns” (采薇) and “Flying-Bird Hairbun” (飞鸟髻); and from 3 to 4 p.m. on August 16, an “Outstanding Cultural Ambassador Recognition Ceremony” will be held on the stone steps of the Tai Kwun laundry yard.
Entry is free, and a stamp-collecting activity runs throughout: visitors receive a task card on arrival and can exchange it for a mystery gift at the information desk once they complete the designated tasks and collect four stamps. The carnival is funded by a donation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and organized by Our Hong Kong Foundation, with programming by the foundation’s Chinese Culture Research Institute. Earlier in the programme, students were trained as “cultural ambassadors,” including promoters of Hanfu culture — at last year’s carnival, Lu Simin, president of the Guofeng Yaji Hong Kong Hanfu Culture Association, said she hoped the event would bring Hanfu dressing into everyday life, noting that “traditional clothing is also worn by season; in high summer we have picked lighter, cooler styles for participants to try.” This year’s carnival falls during the summer holidays, making it a fitting destination for families exploring traditional Chinese culture together.
