Yueyang Lotus Festival: Hanfu Visitors Get Free Entry

From July 10 to October 7, 2026, the Junshan Wild Lotus World in Yueyang, Hunan Province, hosts its annual lotus viewing season under the theme “Grand Lakes and Rivers, Lotus Charm of Junshan.” This year’s edition breaks from traditional flower-viewing formats by transforming the 6,000-mu wild lotus field into an immersive Song Dynasty-themed cultural park, complete with full-cast NPC role-playing, hanfu discounts, and a guofeng market.

Hanfu Free Entry and Rental Service

Visitors wearing proper hanfu receive free admission for the entire duration of the festival. For those without their own garments, the scenic area provides 200 hanfu rental sets with basic styling services. Guests who complete a hanfu photo check-in can also receive a complimentary lotus tuan shan (round fan), merging the traditional accessory with the festival’s floral theme.

The free-entry policy reflects a broader trend among Chinese scenic spots: using hanfu as a cultural gateway to attract younger visitors while creating organic social media content. The Junshan Wild Lotus World, covering the largest contiguous wild lotus habitat in Asia, offers a natural backdrop that pairs naturally with Song-style hanfu aesthetics.

Immersive Song Dynasty Experience

Rather than a passive flower exhibition, the festival deploys NPC performers throughout the park. Lotus-picking women, literati, and flower vendors roam the pavilions and boardwalks, engaging visitors in poetry games and traditional amusements. Upon entering, guests become “figures in a painting,” participating in lotus-themed poetry recitation and ancient-style games that unfold along the lotus pond paths.

During the July 8 to 12 warm-up period, flower vendor NPCs traveled to Yueyang’s Dongting South Road and Bianhe Street to distribute free lotus flowers and scenic area discount coupons, building anticipation through street-level guofeng performance.

Black-Awning Boats and 400 Lotus Varieties

Visitors can board traditional black-awning flower boats to glide through the vast lotus sea, singing Jiangnan folk melodies as they go. The scenic area has introduced 400 lotus varieties, including the rare “Jinling Ningcui” green lotus and the “Bo’ai Lotus” symbolizing selfless love. Mist effects over the lotus pond, combined with poetry-themed installations, create shifting scenic compositions at every turn.

A lotus-themed guofeng market rounds out the experience, offering lotus cultural products, traditional handicrafts, lotus-flavored food, and free freshly brewed lotus leaf tea.

Opening Ceremony and Weekend Programs

The opening ceremony takes place July 10 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, featuring a summer village gala with lotus fairy dances, Baling opera performances, and ancient-style fashion walks. The ceremony also includes the release of Junshan’s summer boutique travel routes, with all NPC performers collectively bowing to welcome guests.

Every Saturday and Sunday, the festival adds limited-time programs: guofeng parent-child study tours with lotus farming NPCs, calligraphy gatherings where visitors can try brushwork alongside a “painting gentleman” NPC, and a lotus-themed youth social mixer built around NPC-issued quest cards with lotus pond cooperative games and poetry chain challenges. During the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, the park will add all-day guofeng flash mobs and moonlit lotus lantern blessings.

With its combination of natural spectacle, hanfu-friendly policy, and immersive cultural programming, the Junshan Lotus Festival offers a model for how scenic areas can integrate traditional clothing culture into seasonal tourism beyond the standard photo-op format.
