A group of young campers from the 2026 China-Europe Youth Camp recently visited the Confucius Classroom at Dongying Vocational College in Shandong province. The visit was part of a cultural immersion program that included tea ceremony, hanfu, guqin music, calligraphy, and Chinese painting — a compact introduction to several pillars of traditional Chinese culture.
Hanfu as a Hands-On History Lesson
Led by Confucius Classroom instructors, the students began with tea ceremony basics: warming the cup, adding tea leaves, pouring water, and serving tea. The exercise introduced the values of harmony, respect, purity, and stillness associated with tea culture. The hanfu session followed, with students trying on different styles of traditional dress while learning about the clothing systems behind them.
The instructors explained the cultural logic behind major hanfu forms, including the upper-and-lower garment system, the deep robe, and the skirt-and-jacket ensemble. For many of the European students, this was the first time they had worn layered traditional clothing rather than simply seeing it on a stage or screen. The experience turned a piece of fabric into a lesson about ritual, aesthetics, and social hierarchy.
Beyond Dress: Guqin, Calligraphy, and Painting
The program also included a guqin class, where students plucked the strings of the ancient seven-stringed instrument and listened to its quiet, distant tones. In the calligraphy and painting area, they picked up brushes to write Chinese characters and paint plum blossoms and bamboo. Each activity was designed to give students a tactile understanding of Chinese artistic expression.
Organizers described the camp as more than a cultural tour. It was also a practical step in China-Italy cooperation on vocational education and humanities. Through direct interaction, the young participants deepened their understanding of each other’s traditions, laying groundwork for future collaboration in vocational training, cultural projects, and youth exchange.
A representative of the Confucius Classroom said the institution welcomes more European students to visit and experience traditional Chinese culture. The goal, the representative added, is to use culture as a bond to expand the depth and breadth of China-Europe cultural exchange and to write a new chapter of mutual learning between civilizations.
Hanfu in International Outreach
Hanfu has become an increasingly common entry point for foreign young people learning about Chinese culture. From Chinese Bridge summer camps to international cultural festivals, wearing hanfu and practicing traditional etiquette are now standard features of China-facing cultural programs. By putting on the clothing and joining the rituals, international participants experience Chinese aesthetics directly rather than reading about them from a distance. For the hanfu community, these exchanges are also a way to expand the global audience for traditional dress.
