During the 2026 May Day holiday, Changsha Tongguanyao Guofeng Paradise launched its National Hanfu Festival, turning the entire Tang Dynasty-themed scenic area into an immersive cultural experience. Over 1,000 staff members worked in full hanfu throughout the holiday, while visitors participated in a province-scale immersive scripted tour, drone firework displays, and over 100 live performances daily.
The centerpiece was Chronicles of Tongguan (Tongguan Fengyun Lu), Hunan’s largest outdoor immersive scripted tour. The entire park served as the stage, with storylines branching according to visitor choices. Socially reserved guests could complete missions silently via mobile clues, while extroverts could improvise dialogue with costumed NPCs portraying historical figures such as the Han-dynasty physician Zhang Zhongjing and the Song-dynasty poet Su Shi.
Mass-participation events punctuated the schedule: a thousand-person chorus of the guofeng ballad Xilou Biexu, a thousand-person hanfu parade, and a thousand-person recitation of Mao Zedong’s Changsha. At night, the visual program escalated — 3,000 lanterns released in a “Mingdeng Sanqian” ceremony, cold-firework meteor showers, a fire-and-iron display combining flame cubes, dragon cannons, and molten iron splashes, plus a thousand-drone aerial choreography.
Daytime programming ran over 100 shows across 13 pop-up stages, including guochao band performances, riddle games with Hunan-local flavor, spontaneous gufeng dance battles, a water-stunt show (Heishi Yuandu), and flower-drum opera. A Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) themed challenge zone let teams compete for silver-ticket rewards redeemable for additional experiences.
Tongguanyao Guofeng Paradise occupies roughly 3,000 mu (200 hectares) in Wangcheng District, Changsha, built around Tang Dynasty ceramic kiln culture. The park has progressively deepened its hanfu positioning: after a successful Spring Festival event earlier in 2026, the May Day National Hanfu Festival marked its most ambitious heritage-immersion program to date. Pre-sale adult tickets were priced at 108 yuan, with an annual pass at 198 yuan.
Visitor numbers during the holiday were described as “stable and orderly with highlights across all formats” by park management, and the event has since been incorporated into the park’s regular large-scale programming calendar. The park had earlier launched an upgraded version of its outdoor scripted tour, Tongguan Fengyun Lu 2.0, as a permanent attraction, signaling that immersive hanfu programming is now part of the park’s core product rather than a seasonal activation.
Access to the park from downtown Changsha is straightforward: visitors from the east bank can take Metro Line 1 to Jinpengqiu Station and then a roughly 25-yuan taxi ride (about 21 minutes), or transfer to public buses. West-bank visitors can take Metro Line 4 to Guanzi Ling Station and then a 30-to-40-yuan taxi (about 30 minutes). The park’s Tang-kiln theme and full-hanfu staffing model make it one of the few destinations in central China where heritage costume is not an add-on — it is the operating system.
