The Kunming Municipal Museum has introduced a hanfu free-entry program for its major exhibition Han Unifies All Under Heaven: The Glorious Civilization of Han, running from June 18 to October 7, 2026. Every Tuesday during July 2026, visitors wearing a full hanfu set with matching makeup and hairstyling can enter the ticketed exhibition free of charge.
The exhibition brings together 135 cultural relics from 12 museums across Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Gansu, and Yunnan, displayed in Temporary Exhibition Hall 6 on the museum’s first floor. Highlights include the “Han Unifies All Under Heaven” tile-end, a silver-thread jade burial suit (on view July 18 to August 23), a gilt bronze horse (June 18 to August 23), a four-deity jade door-knocker (August 25 to October 7), and bronze vessels from the Yangxin family collection. The objects span bronze, jade, lacquerware, coins, glassware, gold, and pottery, collectively presenting Han-dynasty political institutions, military achievements, economic systems, and the everyday material culture of a civilization that shaped Chinese identity for two millennia.
The hanfu free-day policy is one of three discounted access programs. Teachers with valid credentials can visit free once between now and October 7. 2026 secondary-school and college entrance exam (zhongkao and gaokao) graduates can visit free once from July 1 to August 31 by presenting their ID and exam admission ticket. The hanfu program, however, carries specific conditions: the outfit must be a complete set — upper garment plus lower garment or skirt, in any dynastic form, but excluding single outer layers, reform styles, studio photography costumes, cosplay outfits, or mixed casual wear. Full makeup and hairstyling matching the outfit are mandatory; those without styling must purchase a regular ticket.
Regular admission is 50 yuan for adults, 25 yuan for concessions, 65 yuan for a parent-child ticket, and 85 yuan for an all-access pass. The museum is open 9:00 to 17:00 daily (last entry 16:30), closed Mondays except on national holidays. Three free guided tours are offered each day at 10:00, 14:00, and 16:00.
By linking hanfu entry to a Han-dynasty exhibition, the Kunming Museum has created a logical cultural loop: visitors who dress as Han-dynasty people to view Han-dynasty artifacts are not just attending an exhibition — they are participating in a form of embodied heritage engagement. For a museum sector that has struggled to attract younger audiences, the hanfu free-day model offers a replicable template: lower the barrier, raise the experience, and let the clothes do the outreach.
