Suzhou Summer Shopping Month: Su Embroidery and Qipao Travel Routes

From June 11 through late July, Suzhou hosts the 2026 “ICH Good Things, Guochao Refresh” Intangible Heritage Summer Shopping Month, jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s ICH Division, Jiangsu Province’s Department of Culture and Tourism, and Suzhou Municipal Government. Suzhou’s High-tech Zone — the core home of Su embroidery heritage — participated with a multi-pronged showcase blending craft, fashion, and consumer experience.

At the ICH consumption market, young Su embroidery artists Yue Yan and Lu Xiaolin exhibited both classical needlework pieces and contemporary cultural-creative products, demonstrating how 1,000-year-old Su stitch techniques adapt to modern aesthetics and daily-use objects. Yunfan Embroidery formally launched its “Genius Mothers” initiative — a national program supporting female ICH inheritors through skill exchange, product promotion, and entrepreneurship pathways — anchoring new support infrastructure for women in the craft sector.

Concurrently, Suzhou launched the “Qipao Encounters Jiangnan — ICH Summer” qipao travel-photography promotion season, creating 15 qipao-themed travel routes covering the entire city. Visitors can wear qipao, tour Suzhou, and purchase ICH products in one integrated experience. The High-tech Zone’s Husuguan Silk Park was designated as an official stamp-collection checkpoint on these routes, leveraging its dual heritage foundations — sericulture culture and embroidery ICH — as a distinctive Jiangnan stop. An on-site pan-kou workshop was led by Jin Yi, certified inheritor of Suzhou-style qipao crafting technique, giving visitors hands-on experience with the hand-sewn closures that distinguish Su-style qipao from other regional traditions.

On June 12, a round-table forum on ICH innovation brought together industry voices from the zone. Xu Ting of Xiuniang Silk joined an “ICH + Design + Trend Toys” dialogue exploring Su embroidery’s integration with contemporary design and digital consumption. Yao Lan of Yao Embroidery shared case studies on Su stitch applications in modern aesthetics, cultural-creative development, and cross-sector collaboration — contributing practical perspectives on how heritage crafts break out of museum-display isolation into active consumer markets.

A central-media delegation visited Zhenhu’s China Embroidery Art Museum on June 13, touring studios of master inheritors Yao Jianping, Zhang Xue, and Wu Haoxi to observe live embroidery creation and review the zone’s brand-building and cultural-creative innovation strategies, issuing positive assessments of the High-tech Zone’s model for heritage preservation combined with commercial activation. The summer shopping month continues through late July, with additional ICH markets, qipao photography events, and embroidery workshops scheduled across Suzhou’s scenic and commercial districts.
