Starting a hanfu project
Hello! I’m starting work on a hanfu, and I figured I’d make an account so I can ask for help as I go. I was wondering what kind of material would work best? It’s going to have a split overskirt and I was wondering if it would look better with the underskirt made with crepe or if I could do chiffon to make it extra floaty.

honestly, I’m not sure… this is for a cosplay, so it doesn’t match any existing style perfectly. it most closely matches a zhiduo with a qun underneath.

i’m making a version of wei wuxian for a friend, but i want to alter it to make it more historically accurate 🙂

Aaaaahh. Well i think Daopao is the way to go for the inner layer. And some sort of Daxiushan for the outer layer. And in any case i dont chiffon suits the character. But that is just my opinion. If you figure the history of the character he would use more of natural and simple fibers after he became patriarch and even before, since he wants to stand out and be free, I wouldn’t use any rich looking material.

Question about hanfu skirt shapes
I’ve been looking at a ton of photos and videos of hanfu, as well as patterns, and it’s hard to believe that the skirts are just pleated rectangles. My prototype skirt isn’t nearly as voluminous as others that I’ve seen. Am I getting the shape wrong, or is it just the amount/type of fabric used that makes the difference? If I use a more flowy fabric with more pleats, will I get a skirt more similar to the ones I keep seeing in photos? Thanks!

yeah, there’s a variety of types of skirts but the pleated rectangle ones typically use 3-6 meters of fabric if that helps! 6 meters is usually gonna be what you see in the most polished videos since it’ll get you the most floof.

Could you maybe post a picture of the skirt you were tying to achieve and the result you have? it would help pinpoint the pb. And yeah, I think redsugarx is right, maybe you need more yardage. There is the poqun, though, which is a trapezoidal shape…

i checked out your guide, and it was super helpful! i think i’ll probably try to add more yardage first, and then if that’s not getting the desired effect i’ll turn it into a poqun. luckily this is just a mockup, so i have plenty of cheap cotton to use for testing. thanks everyone for your help!
