Questions about fabrics

I am a complete newbie in hanfu making and the problem I am having is how to distinguish the front and back of the fabric and the direction of the stitching. Thank you all!

I usually identify the fabric by the surface of the bump, and the pattern.

I’m not sure I understand your question about the direction of the stitching… do you mean identifying the straight grain from the cross-grain? usually, you can find the selvedge of the fabric, that is the side where threads don’t fray, and the direction parallele to the selvedge is the straight grain. As to the front and back of the fabric, from my understanding, it’s totally up to you. If you want to use the not shiny side of a satin as the front of your garment, it’s your choice.
