I am very curious if the ancient hanfu has pockets?

Where can put things if go out? In the sleeves or in the layers of clothing?

History comments

Peng · 2021-04-07 10:13:56

Yes, can put in sleeves or inner layer of clothes.

In that case, won’t it fall out?😂

I presume not, and even the hanfu you can buy nowadays do not have pockets.

In ancient times, there was an accessory called hebao(荷包) that could be carried when going out. For men, can put small objects on the belt (as seems to be the case in modern times, only the belt type is different).

If it is a specific hanfu style with a sleeve shape like a pipa sleeve, it is possible to put small things in the sleeve. Some hanfu sleeves are open on the top half and sewn on the bottom half.

I thought of this picture, in fact, there were bags in ancient times, used to put things when going out.

I usually call it Weijin Feng (but it has absolutely no relation to the Weijin period Hanfu), because it’s not a hanfu style, although it looks similar.

Wei and Jin are two kingdoms that shared rulership for a time. Hence, Wei Jin Dynasty, a period in hanfu history in which clothing dress developed into this particular style/fashion. An ensemble consists of shenyi (robe/dress) and beizi (outer robe). The costume in the picture is not original hanfu; it contains elements of Wei Jin style with a full dress (note the collar is modern with lapel] and an outer robe with wide sleeves.

Ling · 2021-07-22 10:28:44

In fact, this style of clothing is not very closely related to Hanfu. In the early stages of the Hanfu revival, some merchants who did not fully understand the Hanfu form made them out.

It could be called Weijin Feng (魏晋风) because the merchants at that time took this name. Although it doesn’t exactly fit the shape of Hanfu, there are not many people who like this style. It is more like a martial style or Xian style.

Bethuu · 2021-07-25 03:31:56

Thanks for your answers, I still don’t quite understand it, but I probably get it. Weijin feng or weijin style?, leaning towards martial arts or martial arts style. Although the name has the name of the dynasty, it doesn’t have anything to do with those two dynasties. Is that right? 😟😂😂

About the style of hanfu

I know there are some styles of hanfu that are not quite correct. Is there a list of them? Or how to tell if they are correct or not.

Kaldea · 2021-07-31 11:08:44

I only know part of it
1. weijin style 魏晋风
2. Doupeng 斗篷

Many traditional costumes in the martial arts style are actually not exactly considered hanfu. As well as the short style Quju and a modified version of Song pants.

The first way to judge this is to refer to the basic features of hanfu, such as those mentioned in this article (https://dev.newhanfu.com/7721.html), part 1.2.

It is supposed to be based on the hanfu of the Wei and Jin dynasties. But with a better looking fabric color.

Specific criteria about hanfu

I have a question, I often see some discussions about hanfu, some hanfu fans think that wuxia, dunhuang style are not part of hanfu.

I am often puzzled. What do you guys think?😐😐😐

History comments

Elizabeth · 2021-08-25 22:03:46

Technically speaking, it’s not really hanfu. But there is no need to be so clear about it.

History likes:5

Eddie · 2021-08-25 23:13:40

Hanfu and martial arts style, Dunhuang style are all part of traditional Chinese clothing, so they are very similar in many ways.

There are a few basic bases for judging Hanfu, such as Jiaoling Youren, jointed sleeves, center seam and so on.

The topic of such discussions never stops, but in fact they all belong to cultural treasures and are worthy of our understanding and protection. There are plenty of people who like each kind of costume, but arguing is never the solution, learning from each other and developing is.

Kaldea · 2021-08-26 03:24:58

In fact, it is also a diversification of hanfu, so it is quite good.

I think of them as different genre of hanfu. 😊 Wuxia is martial arts style. Dunhuang is mystical fusion of beautiful exotic side to hanfu.🙂😎

About Cheongsam?

How do you think about cheongsam? I have a feeling that most of those who like hanfu is not very receptive to cheongsam, just my personal opinion.

History comments

Simoez · 2021-09-16 09:33:18

In my opinion, hanfu and cheongsam are both exquisite traditional dresses that present different styles of beauty. But the crowd of people who know about hanfu is far less than cheongsam came to be. But many traditional hanfu are redesigned to resemble cheongsam or too modern styles, which is why many hanfu lovers want to defend the image of hanfu.

Eddie · 2021-09-16 10:35:59

It can’t be considered a dislike, in fact, it’s more for people who like hanfu, hope everyone can know hanfu accurately, not artificially that hanfu and cheongsam are the same dress.

The asymmetrical mandarin collar point to manchurian ^^ Hanfu typically has either crossed or symmetrical collars, the off-center line is more Manchurian style

LiangYuZuan · 2022-05-23 03:50:56

It has buttons to hold it together single piece. Looks like early form of cheongsam or qipao. Not hanfu.

midnightriver · 2022-05-24 16:22:58 · reply LiangYuZuan(#6557)

Generally agree, but buttons aren’t a guarantee that a piece isn’t hanfu – round collar robes of the Tang, Song, and Ming almost always have buttons, and Ming upright collar robes were also buttoned.

LiangYuZuan · 2022-05-25 03:51:42 · reply midnightriver(#6577)

So true🤔 I had mistakenly thought round collar was tied together at the neck before introduction of buttons. Song & Ming were closer toward Qing Dynasty, chronologically speaking.
