Bi Xue Chan (碧血蝉), a 40-episode period detective drama, is set to premiere exclusively on iQiyi in Q4 2026. Adapted from a novel of the same name by Bu Mingyan (不明眼) on Douban Reading, the series combines Wuxia (武侠), mystery, and a touch of Chinese cosmic horror.
Directed by Pan Anzi (潘安子), known for Under the Microscope (显微镜下的大明), the story follows three unlikely allies who investigate eight bizarre cases, only to uncover a conspiracy involving an immortality elixir that threatens the entire dynasty. Meanwhile, actor Zhang Wanyi is also gearing up for a busy season with three new dramas of his own, spanning family, crime, and revolutionary genres.
Eight Strange Cases, One Deadly Secret
The drama is set in the fictional Datong Yongzhao (大同永昭) dynasty. Fifteen years ago, a sinister cult called the Chang Sheng Gong (长生宫) was destroyed after using live humans for alchemy. Now, a token carved with a Bi Xue Chan has reappeared, stirring up old wounds and whispers of eternal life. Three people from opposing sides are drawn together: Yang Wujian (杨无间), a former elder of that very cult; Shen Qingshi (沈青石), a cold agent for the imperial court; and Zhou Huai (周槐), the young master of a powerful martial arts guild. They meet at a grand tournament and are forced to form an investigation team.
Their assignment is to solve three cold cases, but this quickly expands into the “Eight Great Cases.” These include a human sacrifice for medicine, a haunted temple, missing sword apprentices, a cursed cicada molting, a ghostly bride without a tongue, and a family massacre. Each case twists and turns, revealing a larger pattern. While trying to solve these mysteries, they realize all roads lead back to the same mastermind: the former cult leader, who is using the promise of immortality as a tool to seize the throne and plunge the kingdom into chaos.
Three Misfits, One Mission
