On July 11, 2026, a reading and appreciation event titled “Cloud Meets Cloud Gauze, Elegance Encounters the East” was held at the Yuehai Cloud Clubhouse in Guangzhou. The event was co-presented by Yuehai Land, Southern Metropolis Daily, Guangdong People’s Publishing House, and Fengyu Xiangluo (凤语香罗), centering on the launch of the book Da Xie Xiangyunsha (大写香云纱) and an accompanying Xiangyunsha intangible cultural heritage art exhibition — merging urban lifestyle with the aesthetics of this nationally protected textile craft.
The Book and Its Author
Da Xie Xiangyunsha editor-in-chief Wang Dongfan (王东璠), founder of the brand Fengyu Xiangluo, served as the keynote speaker. A longtime practitioner in Xiangyunsha cultural promotion and industrial development, Wang has spent years excavating the Lingnan cultural veins, artisan spirit, and contemporary value embedded in Xiangyunsha. Her work aims to bring the fabric into mainstream visibility and weave it into modern life.
During the sharing session, Wang traced Xiangyunsha’s century-long journey — from the natural endowments of the Lingnan water towns through the time-tempered ancient processing techniques to the fabric’s distinctive color, texture, and artistic aesthetics. She described Xiangyunsha’s birth as a gift of nature and time, and the cumulative result of generations of artisans preserving their craft through dozens of painstaking steps that yield its uniquely crisp, structured handfeel.
The Art Exhibition
Beyond the book talk, the Xiangyunsha ICH art exhibition became the highlight of the event. Displayed pieces included multiple Xiangyunsha art works and masterfully woven textiles, among them a Republican-era (1912–1949) Xiangyunsha jacket that had survived a century without fading — a testament to the fabric’s colorfastness and material integrity. Unlike traditional static exhibitions, this event offered an immersive tactile experience: guests could touch different Xiangyunsha varieties — zhengjuan (正绢) Xiangyunsha, heavy-satin (重锻) Xiangyunsha, tortoise-shell crackle (龟裂纹) Xiangyunsha, and lacquered (大漆) Xiangyunsha — and directly appreciate the ancient techniques of “one steaming, three boiling, eighteen sunning” that define this craft.
The exhibition also demonstrated crossovers between Xiangyunsha and calligraphy, home decor, and cultural creative products, surprising attendees. Every garment and handcrafted piece on display embodied the passage of time, bearing witness to the generational inheritance of Xiangyunsha dyeing and finishing techniques. Guests walked through the space slowly, examining each piece closely, experiencing firsthand the “timeless classic” quality of Xiangyunsha.
Shunde’s Summer Xiangyunsha Boom
Shunde’s Xiangyunsha summer surge is heating up in parallel. The Shunde District Museum has launched ten summer series activities around its annual grand exhibition “Cloud Yarn Shadows — Xiangyunsha Thematic Culture Exhibition” (云纱觅影), including Xiangyunsha-themed script-based roleplay games, handicraft workshops, and Guofeng photography sessions — totaling over 40 events. Among the most popular is “Three Aces of Gauze — Simulated Life Script Experience,” where participants role-play as a sunning workshop heir, a fashion designer, or a cross-sector brand curator, experiencing Xiangyunsha culture through immersive interactive gaming. Qinghui Garden Museum has also launched “Cloud Yarn Calligraphy Art — Zhou Zhifeng Xiangyunsha Calligraphy Exhibition,” an innovative presentation where Xiangyunsha fabric substitutes for paper, creating a cross-disciplinary collision between calligraphy and ICH craft.
