Hairstyles for shorter hair

Does anyone have any advice for hanfu hairstyles for shorter hair? My hair barely reaches my shoulders, and I want to look more traditional but avoid wearing a full wig.

If not short hairstyles, does anyone have recommendations for where to get extensions or pin-on buns?

You can try playing around with braid designs and different hairclips!!!

Teh trick with sort hair is to tuck everything, that hides the fact that your hair is short. Then wear a lot of accessories 😉

If only that could also work for me… I have like 3cm hair rn XD Probably no other choice for me than to wear a wig in the end haha

Mamianqun Pleats

How do you get mamianqun pleats to stay when working with taffeta? Or other low-iron fabrics?

History comments

Merriel · 2025-01-29 13:47:12

I think these are the best fabrics, because synthetic fibers stay in place when heated. I suggest heating thet as much as possible using a towel or other cotton fabric between your iron and your skirt. Otherwise, if you feel up to it, you can cheat by stitching the pleats in place 😉 Trust me, linen is far worse at staying in place ^^

magπ · 2025-02-23 22:50:23 · reply Malisa(#13055)

I wish! I’m new to sewing so I can’t really make my own patterns yet.

magπ · 2025-02-23 22:51:06 · reply Orozco(#13066)

nothing yet 🙁 But I HAVE found some good qipao patterns online, might use the standing collar method from there…

Skirt confusion

This is kind of a silly question, but…
Would someone please explain to me the difference between a mamianqun and a baidiequn?
Thank you so much haha

Malisa · 2025-03-13 20:02:00

Mamianqun has these iconic “skirt doors” at the front and back – meaning the front/back panels are flat with no pleats, while the sides are heavily pleated. It’s like having two smooth “doors” covering the pleats when you stand still .
Baidiequn is fully pleated all around, giving it a more uniform, flowy look. No “doors” here! .

Mamianqun = fancy doors + side pleats, Baidiequn = soft pleats everywhere! Hope this helps~ 💕

michelleross · 2025-03-14 02:25:29

Mamianqun and Baidiequn both look SUPER similar at first glance because they’re both pleated Hanfu skirts.

kathleen · 2025-03-14 05:10:34

Mamianqun is usually made with thicker, luxurious brocade for formal vibes (think Ming Dynasty royalty or even Princess Diana’s iconic look! 🎀). Baidiequn uses lighter fabrics for daily wear, popular in the Song Dynasty for its practicality.

Thanks so much guys, that makes sense now 🙂

How to make a plus size qipao?

I found a pattern online for a qipao but I’m struggling with making one big enough for me. Any advice and/or patterns?

Tips for Plus-Size Qipao:

Pattern Scaling – Proportionally enlarge the base pattern, focusing on bust/waist/hip measurements. Maintain curves (armholes, neckline).

Fabric – Use stretch blends (silk-spandex) or cut non-stretch fabrics on the bias for flexibility.

Adjustments – Raise the waistline, add subtle A-line flair at the hem, and include side panels for better fit.

Mock-Up – Test with cheap fabric first; check mobility (sitting, reaching) and adjust seams/armhole depth.

Closures – Use hidden snaps on side slits for adjustable comfort.
