Just finished Stories of Yanxi Palace last night. Having mixed feelings about the drama as a whole. The acting and cinematography was top notch. Sometimes I yearned for more characters with good morals. The FL was such a compelling and complex character, but there were just so many villains! The plot took some very unexpected and satisfying twists, but the final few episodes 10 years later seemed a bit tacked on to the end. There wasn’t enough time to grow to care deeply about the younger, now grown up characters.
But overall, I thought it was worth watching. I’d give it 7.5/10

This drama was arguably the most popular palace drama in 2018, and I remember there was another one around the same time, Ruyi.

I never watched this show, but I heard a lot about it and I understand the feeling of having too many vilains. ^^ I saw the Netflix spin off though, hated it, didn’t encourage me to watch the original show.

@Quinn Isn’t that a lovely detail of the photo? 🥰 The girl in her eye is the FL, a palace maid that she ends up loving like a little sister and visa versa.

This is one of my favorite shots from episode 1 of “Love Like the Galaxy.” The way the four servant girls’ skirts move as they walk behind Old Madam and 2nd Aunt is just so lovely. Can anyone tell, are they wearing quju shenyi? The servants at least?

Not really traditional quju shenyi, the style in the picture appeared more in the beginning stages of the hanfu renaissance, and is now appearing more in dramas.

I really enjoyed Leo Wu’s acting in Love Like the Galaxy!! I even think this drama compares to the story of minglan in my mind, they are similar.

This modern version of quju is more comfortable for wearing, so it is more common to see nowadays. The traditional quju is longer, to the ankles (the skirt underneath is not visible).

Just finished my second time through watching “The Sword and the Brocade.” I love this one so much. The acting is just top notch and the story is just lovely. Not to mention it’s makes me grateful for my own mother-in-law. At least now it’s not cultural acceptable for her to try and shove a third person into the marriage! 😂
But seriously, the mother-in-law turns out fine, if just a bit misguided. And the touches of humor are just perfect. The SML and SFL’s whole plot line was so adorably funny. The ML and FL just nail their parts so well. The slow burn of there romance was… *chef’s kiss*
