Hello! I’m a total newbie to sewing, but I’m starting my sewing journey in order to maybe save money on hanfu (rip yingmei’s bank account 😥). I’ve started by making some paper beizi using a pattern posted here by another user. I’ll post pictures as soon as I figure out how to. In the meantime, does anyone have any advice on how to get started? What hanfu would be feasible for a beginner like me?

I have made a cross neck top before. I started by cutting out each part from paper according to the making pattern and piecing it together to make sure i am clear each part. Then I made a preliminary attempt on a cheap piece of fabric. Draw each part with chalk and leave space for sewing.
I was not skilled in how to operate the sewing machine, I could only sew individual straight lines. So I got a helper and I told her where to start.
In fact, it is very easy for a skilled sewer to make a hanfu. Just make sure they know what the features of a hanfu are, such as the center seam in the middle of the back and what the collar looks like. So you need to have a hanfu as a reference, or lots of pictures.

Hanfu+culture presentation in school
For my final theatre project, I was given the opportunity to do anything so I did a presentation on the story of Houyi and Cang’e. It was wonderful getting to share Hanfu and my culture with my majority non-Chinese class 😊

Help identifying hanfu style
I made a post a week or two ago showing costumes from the English-language opera “Dream of the Red Chamber” featuring this costume from the show. I’ve never seen anything like this skirt before. Hanfu experts help me identify it!!
For context: The opera takes place in the Qing Dynasty and this is the costume of a eunich.

Yingmei's day in (in honor of mundanity)
I find that in my hanfu journey I keep seeking some sort of fantasy life – one where I stroll through gardens, smell flowers, and fan myself all day like bygone royalty. This is my reminder to love real life too. I took photos of myself in hanfu doing average, mundane things like drawing and doing my makeup all in my messy room. Hanfu isn’t just for a gods-and-princesses life! Sometimes it’s important to just let yourself find the beauty of being boring.

Every year the Chinese department students put on a performance for the Mid-Autumn Festival. This year we performed some poems, songs, and traditional music (you can see my friend holding a xiao in the background), and told the story of Chang’e and Houyi.
